The story of the Jamaican Olympic bobsled team has been Disney-ized into a mass of clichés that only a tourist board could love. As the leader of the four-man team, Leon (Cliffhanger) has a sweet intensity that gives the movie some heft. But Doug E. Doug’s “Wacky Rasta” comic relief gets tired real fast, and Candy is simply dull as their coach.
Worse, Runnings drives its gimmick – Jamaican Bobsledders! – into icy overkill. At its infrequent best, the movie works as acceptably unsophisticated kiddie fodder. At its worst, it borders on a minstrel show: The Love Bug with Herbie played by four Jamaican guys.
