Vauxhall and I – Monkish Date

Vauxhall Gardens was a 19th-century pleasure ground in London famous for art shows, concerts, fireworks and illicit love affairs. Like the park, this album provides much frivolity and aural allure: tight, barely disguised Smiths-like melodies support the whimsical tauntings of songs like “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get” Vauxhall and I is a fantasy date with Britain’s most ironic and monkish pop star.

Romeo is Bleeding – Freak Show

This studiously garish underworld thriller centers on a furtive, hedonistic New York City cop whose difining trait is his complete lack of scruples. Jack Grimaldi (Oldman) makes blood money on the side by revealing the interim locations of Witness Protection Program volunteers to the mob. If you’re wondering how Jack gets away with this you’re already demonstrating more logic than Romeo is Bleeding, a movie whose helter-skelter plot is held together less by substance than by “poetic” dollops of mood and sensation.

Many of the thrills come from Olin, who plays a mob assassin. Flashing killer legs and a killer smile, she’s everything you want in a femme fatale. Yet instead of coaxing a character out of Olin’s ret-hot seggestiveness, she’s turned into a ruthless psycho avenger. What begins as a fable of corrupt ambition becomes an ugly carnival of mayhem.

The Secret Garden – In The Bud

This darkly lavish version of the Frances Hodgson Burnett children’s story makes clear its link to gothic romance; basically it’s Jane Eyre retooled for the sandbox set. Thankfully, director Agnieszka Holland found the perfect young actress to play Mary Lennox, the cynical orphan who brings her self and her uncle’s (John Lynch) gloomy estate into bloom when she discovers a hidden arbor.

With the face of a sour cherub, Maberly becomes a happy camper – she’s likably unlikable. Holland’s lush color scheme loses some oomph on video, but it’s hard to imagine the little loner in your house not taking this one to heart.

Kembang Jepun – Taste the Ancient Atmosphere

Almost as old as Surabaya (Indonesia), the old street named Kembang Jepun is thriving while remaining true to its ancient origin. The story of Kembang Jepun dates back to colonial times, following the Dutch’s decision to split Surabaya into three, divided by Jl. Kembang Jepun and the Kalimas River.

Kembang Jepun, which at that time was known as Handelstraat, become the main site for commerce, garnished by Dutch architectural jewels and a touch of Chinatown. Today, the regional government of Surabaya has given the 750-meter street new life, transforming it into a wholesale trade center by day, and an entertainment site for all people by night.

Experience the fancy light decorations while enjoying the cuisine served by hundreds of cleverly organized local vendors. While at it, try not to get caught by surprised at the marvelous way the street has aged, growing into a legend of its own.

Chronic Fatigue – Blame Bad Bedside Manner

Doctor’s bedside manner can determine how patients feel months after recorvering from illnesses, according to a study in The Lancet. Researchers found that of 618 patients, 62.6% felt constantly tired six months after other symptoms had disappeared. The original symptoms bore no medical relation to the fatigue problem later on.

Instead, the study linked the chronic fatigue to three factors: the patients blaming symptoms on the past infections, their doctors presenting a vague diagnosis, and doctors giving their patients a sick note for their employers. Most people who complained of chronic fatigue had two commonalities: they had a generally pessimistic attitude and a feeling of vulnerability to viruses.

Ills of the Pill – Higher Risk of Breast Cancer

Since oral contraceptives were introduced some 30 years ago, tess haven’t generally linked them to an increased risk of breast cancer. But a study by the Department of Epidemiology of the Netherlands Cancer Institute finds that young woman who have taken “the pill” for more than four years do face a greater risk of breast cancer. The study compared 918 women between the ages of 20 and 54 with breast cancer to the same number of women randomly selected.
The use of oral contraceptives was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in both the youngest age bracket (below 36) and the oldest (over 46) – but not those in between. Women in the youngest group who had taken the pill for your years or more – especially those who started before age 20 – faced twice the risk of their contemporaries who had taken it for a shorter period.

On the Road? – Get Your Shots

Easily lured by gastronomic temptations while travelling in exotic locales? If so, then you’re at risk of catching hepatitis A. The disease, which is transmitted in food and water infected by fecal material, is the most frequent infection in travelers that can be prevented by immunization.

Three per 1,000 travellers get it; those who eat and drink under unhygienic conditions stand a 20 out of 1,000 chance. The majority of hepatitis A cases in industrialized nations are from vacationers who bring it home.

Even those who stay in luxury hotels in developing nations are at risk, according to a study by the Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine of the University of Zurich. The autors, writing in the Journal of the American medical Association, say the new inactivated” hepatitis A vaccines, like Havrix, are the way to go – they protect 95% of recepients and last for ten years or more. That’s far better than the widely used immune globulin, which lasts three to five months.
