Kembang Jepun – Taste the Ancient Atmosphere

Almost as old as Surabaya (Indonesia), the old street named Kembang Jepun is thriving while remaining true to its ancient origin. The story of Kembang Jepun dates back to colonial times, following the Dutch’s decision to split Surabaya into three, divided by Jl. Kembang Jepun and the Kalimas River.

Kembang Jepun, which at that time was known as Handelstraat, become the main site for commerce, garnished by Dutch architectural jewels and a touch of Chinatown. Today, the regional government of Surabaya has given the 750-meter street new life, transforming it into a wholesale trade center by day, and an entertainment site for all people by night.

Experience the fancy light decorations while enjoying the cuisine served by hundreds of cleverly organized local vendors. While at it, try not to get caught by surprised at the marvelous way the street has aged, growing into a legend of its own.

Yogyakarta: City with cultural heritage

Yogyakarta (some people call it Jogja, Jogjakarta, or Yogya) is a city with outstanding historical and cultural heritage. Yogyakarta was the centre of the Mataram Dynasty (1575-1640), and until now the kraton (the sultan's palace) exists in its real functions. Also, Yogyakarta has numerous thousand-year-old temples as inheritances of the great ancient kingdoms, such as Borobudur temple established in the ninth century by the dynasty of Syailendra.

More than the cultural heritages, Yogyakarta has beautiful natural panorama. The green rice fields cover the suburban areas with a background of the Merapi Mountain. The natural beaches can be easily found to the south of Yogyakarta.

Here the society lives in peace and has typical Javanese hospitality. Just try to go around the city by bike, pedicab, or horse cart; and you will find sincere smiles and warm greeting in every corner of the city.

An artistic atmosphere is deeply felt in Yogyakarta. Malioboro, as the center of Yogyakarta, is overwhelmed by handicraft from all around the city. Street musicians always ready entertain the visitors of the lesehan food stalls.

Those who have visited Yogyakarta reveal that this city makes them long for it. Just visit here, then you will understand what this means.

Transportations to Yogyakarta:
Train:
You may reach Yogyakarta by train from Jakarta, Bandung, or Surabaya
Bus: Yogyakarta is reachable by bus from Sumatra Island, Bali Island, and most cities of Java Island.
Plane: Recently, international direct flights from Kuala Lumpur are established to Yogyakarta. In addition, domestic flights to Yogyakarta from Jakarta, Denpasar, Balikpapan, and many others, are available now.

Rinjani: Mountain and National Park in Lombok Island

There over 20 villages surround Mt. Rinjani and there are many routes up the mountain, but the main access is from Senaru in the north and Sembalun Lawang to the east. The challenging three-day Rinjani Trek route from Senaru to the crater rim (Plawangan), down to the stunning crater lake then on to Sembalun Lawang, is considered one of the best treks in South East Asia. Those heading for the summit usually prefer to start in Sembalun Lawang.

A modelfor ecotourism in Indonesia, the community-based activities are focused on the Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru, the most popular starting point for the tough trek. Developed with New Zealand Government assistance since 1999, the Rinjani Trek Centre embodies under one roof (satu atap) the unique partnership of the National Park, tourism industry and local communities that has been forged to manage and protect the Rinjani mountain environment.

Gunung Rinjani National Park lies within the major transition zone (Wallacea) where the flora and fauna of South East Asia makes a dramatic transition into that which is typical of Australasia. The Park has a rich variety of plants and animals, although they can be hard to spot due to the terrain and rainforest cover.
Sometimes seen early in the mornings is the rare black Ebony leaf monkey, known locally as Lutung.

The Long tailed grey macaque or Kera is common in Lombok and older males are seen on the crater rim. Rusa deer are forest dwellers and are occasionally seen along the Rinjani trek trail. The smaller Barking deer or Kijang has an alarm call with a distinct dog-like bark. Look for the disturbed ground where the Wild pig or Babi hutan has been foraging. Also found in the forest is the Leopard cat or Bodok alas, Palm civet or Ujat and Porcupine or Landak.

A variety of colourful birds live in the forests of the Park. Perhaps the best-known icon of the Park is the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo that is not found any further west of Lombok. Many of the forest-dwelling animals, insects, birds, civets and monkeys owe their survival to the wild fig tree or Beringin as a provider of food and shelter. The pine-like Casuarina species, Cemara, are a feature of the grassy higher slopes. Orchids or Anggrek are also a feature of the grassland areas, as is Edelweiss or Bunga Abadi growing above the tree line; it is a beautiful icon of the Park and one of our best-known sub-alpine plants.

Warnings:
The Rinjani Trek is a challenging mountain walk and you must be prepared with good equipment, warm and windproof clothing. Rinjani can attract severe storms, lightening and strong winds. When the weather is settled, the sun is intense and the nights frosty. Parts of the trail are steep and slippery. Beware of bad weather and risks of exposure to the wet and cold (hypothermia). If caught in an electrical storm, take shelter and avoid prominent ridges. Beware of snakes, and stinging insects and plants. Leeches can be a nuisance in the wet season.

Place Interest: Pasar Seni Kuta Bali

Pasar Seni Kuta (Kuta Art Market) is located between Kuta Square / Jl.Kartika Plaza and the beach. Its quite a large area and has rows of stalls, selling the same stuff you’ll find all over Kuta.

The idea ‘if it works for your neighbor, copy it’, has been fully blown out in this neighborhood and most people are twiddling their thumbs, due to the downturn in tourism. Wandering the art market today I did see some wooden clocks, that were in the shape of a giant wrist watch, quite clever.

There were hanging Jesus’s, picture carvings with elephants, 4ft long carved lizards painted in Aboriginal motifs, Hawaiian shirts, baseball hats, surf shorts, Bintang t-shirts and mess-topped bamboo food dishes.

It costs nothing to browse a pasar seni, and if you don’t want to but just say, “Saya lihat-lahat saja.” (I’m only looking). Pasar seni is open from 9-10am and closes at 7pm-8pm.

Kuta: a former fishing village in Bali Island

Kuta is now the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area that merges into the neighboring towns. Legian, to the north, is the commercial hub of Kuta and the site of many restaurants and entertainment spots. Most of the area’s big beach-front hotels are in the southern section of Tuban.

Legian and Seminyak are northern extensions of Kuta along Jl. Legian and Jl. Seminyak. They are somewhat quieter suburbs with cottage-style accommodations, where many of the expat crowd live. Also to the north are Petitenget, Berawa, Canggu, and Seseh - new and quieter continuations of Kuta’s beach. They are easy to reach through Abian Timbul or Denpasar and Kerobokan. Several large hotels are located in this area: the Oberoi Bali, Hard Rock Hotel Bali, the Intan Bali Village, the Legian in Petitenget, the Dewata Beach and the Bali Sani Suites in Berawa. To the south, Kuta Beach extends beyond the airport into Jimbaran.

Kuta is just 2 miles from Ngurah Rai airport in Tuban, making it an ideal first night for many visitors. An airport taxi might cost around 25,000rp, dropping you in the Poppies Lane / Benesari area, with a choice of budget / mid-range accommodation.

After the 2002 Sari Club / Paddy’s Bar bombing, Kuta’s nightlife hit the skids. Seminyak seemed to be charging ahead with new bars opening, some of which were conspicuously open at the front, allowing easy escape should there be another bombing. Kuta’s location however meant that was due for a rebound, so with MBarGo, Hook, The Wave, the new Paddy’s, Sky Lounge and other venues, Kuta is a strong contender for nightlife action.

Kuta may not be paradise, but it is not the hell hole some travellers make it out to be.

Antonio Blanco: The Maestro from Bali

Early life
Don Antonio Blanco hailed from Catalonia is Spain, born on September 15, 1911 in the Ermita district of Manila. Blanco was educated at the American Central School in Manila. During his high school years he loved the arts, literature and language classes but struggled in scientific subjects. No wonder he spoke six languages - Spanish, French, English, Tagalog, Indonesian and a bit of Balinese.

Education
After completing high school in Manila, Blanco studied at the National Academy of Art in New York under Sidney Dickinson. Even during those early formative years, Blanco concentrated on the human form, fascinated by the female body more than any other subject matter. After finishing his study in New York, he travelled extensively throughout the world to further his studies and ignite his vagabond spirit. Finally he landed in Bali in 1952. Later the King of Ubud granted him 2 hectares of land on the spot where 2 streams come together creating the Campuhan River.

Family
After marrying a famous Balinese dancer, Ni Ronji, the Maestro lived in Bali with his 4 children, Tjempaka, Mario, Orchid and Maha Devi. The family home is a palatial hilltop house with a thatched bamboo roof, stone carvings, gilded statues and lush gardens. After a brief trip to the United States where Blanco secured many new collectors, the couple didn’t leave their fantasy home at all.

The artist
Blanco lived and worked in his magical hilltop home till his death in 1999, creating feverishly his fantasy portraits of beautiful women. Surrounded by lush gardens, rice fields and a Banyan tree standing over his family’s temple, Antonio Blanco proceeded to create a new reality for himself. His isolated world was much sought after by eager art lovers, collectors and promoters. In a few years, Blanco became arguably one of the most famous foreign artists to make Bali his home. He was recognized in both Indonesia and abroad, receiving numerous awards and commanding huge prizes at international auctions.

By the end of his life, Blanco was building his museum at his studio in Campuhan. Dramatically he died just before its inauguration. His funeral was marked by a very important cremation in Ubud. It was Blanco’s dream to turn his studio-mansion into a museum. His son, Mario, fulfilled this dream by following his path to become a painter. The Blanco Renaissance Museum is now open to the public, performing both the maestro’s and Mario’s artworks.

Bali Bombing: Tragedy in 2002

At 23:05 (15:05 UTC) on 12 October 2002, a suicide bomber inside the nightclub Paddy’s Pub detonated a bomb in his backpack, causing many patrons, with or without injuries, to immediately flee into the street. Fifteen seconds later, a second and much more powerful car bomb hidden inside a white Mitsubishi van, was detonated by another suicide bomber outside the Sari Club, located opposite Paddy’s Pub.

The van was also rigged for detonation by remote control in case the second bomber had a sudden change of heart. Damage to the densely populated residential and commercial district was immense, destroying neighbouring buildings and shattering windows several blocks away. The car bomb explosion left a one meter deep crater.

The local Sanglah hospital was ill-equipped to deal with the scale of the disaster and was overwhelmed with the number of injured, particularly burn victims. There were so many people injured by the explosion that some of the injured had to be placed in hotel pools near the explosion site to ease the pain of their burns. Many of the injured were flown to the relatively close proximity of Darwin and Perth for specialist burns treatment.

In all 202 people were killed in the Kuta bombings. The effect on the tourist industry was massive, with many Australians declaring they would never set foot in Bali again. The local economy suffered greatly and many local businesses went bankrupt, locals sometimes returning to their village to farm rice. The economy was slowly recovering when a second bombing occurred in 2005.

Bali : The Island of Hinduism

Bali is truly unique, in that it is the only Hindu island in Indonesia, a country dominated by Islam. Hinduism is a religion that developed out of the way of life of the people living on the banks of the Indus river in India and Hinduism came to Indonesia many centuries ago. The earliest written records in Bali, metal inscriptions called prasasti (Prasasti Blanjong is an example), speak of Buddhist and Hindu influences and date back to the 9th century AD. The caves, statues and bronzes of Goa Gajah and Gunung Kawi indicate this too.

As far as Bali is concerned the 3 big events that pushed Hinduism to the fore were the marriage of the Balinese king Udayana to Princess Mahendra from East Java, at the end of the 10th century thus bringing the 2 areas together. This was followed in 1343 by the conquest of Bali by the Majapahit empire of Gajah Mada, prime minister of that kingdom in East Java. Finally in 1515 the Majapahit empire in Java fell to the increasingly powerful Muslim Mataram empire. This created an exodus of priests, crafts people and noblemen and helped to make Bali the unique center of art that it is.

As many people will tell you the version of Hinduism (Agama Hindu ) that is practiced in Bali differs from that practiced in India. One of the most obvious differences is the quantity of offerings given in Bali, which is usually to either ward off evil spirits or to satisfy the Gods, a relic of the Balinese animist beliefs to which Hinduism has been melded.
