Vauxhall Gardens was a 19th-century pleasure ground in London famous for art shows, concerts, fireworks and illicit love affairs. Like the park, this album provides much frivolity and aural allure: tight, barely disguised Smiths-like melodies support the whimsical tauntings of songs like “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get” Vauxhall and I is a fantasy date with Britain’s most ironic and monkish pop star.
